Farming was very important in the south. There were few cities and less industry. Removing cotton seeds by hand took all day and was very annoying. In 1793, the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. This blew cotton production through the roof and in 1860 southern cotton accounted for 2/3 of the total export of the US.
